My family and I live in Ithaca, NY – home to Ithaca College and Cornell University. It is here I first heard the quote from Ezra Cornell: “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.” While Cornell University is an incredible institution, the quote makes me think first of public libraries. It is in our public libraries that a person without any qualification but their own desire can pursue any line of inquiry.
The fruitful inspiration that drives public library members through the physical or digital doors, should also be a major component of the school library media center’s relationship with students. My current focus in my MSLIS program through Syracuse University’s iSchool is in School Media. Whether I will find employment with my teacher certification or a position in a different library setting, my interest in the library as an institution for individual exploration and learning will not fade.
